Youth Rugby in Virginia:

Spring is the primary season for tackle rugby in Virginia and summer the primary season for tag rugby. Tag is played by boys and girls in grades K-6 with coed teams. Tackle is played gender specific starting with the 4th grade level (ages 8 & 9).

Alexandria Rugby has teams at all levels of tag - PreK/K, 1/2, 3/4, 5/6 (the equivalent of U7, U9,U11, U13) and tackle teams at 3/4th grade (coed) and boys only at 5th/6th and 7th/8th grades. Both the tackle and tag programs compete in the Rugby Virginia youth league against teams from throughout Virginia. In the summer we field both tag and tackle teams. Spring and fall we hold weekly "Fun League" sessions to allow the kids to stay involved with the game as they also play other sports.

For Girls: 3rd and 4th tackle is coed. 5th-8th grade tackle is gender specific. We refer all 5th-8th grade girls to our neighbor club, Ft. Hunt Girls Rugby. Please contact Ft. Hunt's coach Kat Aversano for information about their program. (

We start the youngest children off with tag rugby, a seven-a-side version of the sport that focuses on fun, fitness, and skill building while promoting the concepts of teamwork and sportsmanship. The tackle rugby program is a modified version of the full contact game that structures the game in a safe fashion to promote fun, skill building and inclusion.

All of our coaches are Rugby Virginia and USA Rugby certified and registered. The safety and well-being of the child is always our primary concern, then we stress the fun - because rugby is first and foremost a game.

We are always looking for volunteers to help organize, coach and ref matches, especially the tag version (which is a pretty simple game so no rugby experience is necessary to help). Please consider giving some time - the kids really appreciate it!

Registration can be done on AR's online registration site.
For additional information contact AR's youth rugby coordinator, Owen Malone .

Youth rugby is a fun and safe way of introducing our youth to the sport. More information about youth rugby can be found on the USA Rugby website, the governing body for the sport in the United States.
